The Tonto Crape Myrtle growing in front of the Bed & Breakfast is my favorite of our shrubs. It has been blooming with wonderfully vibrant flowers for about 7-8 weeks so far and is still looking great even this late in the summer.

A Surprise Wedding!
One of the weddings that we had at the Bed & Breakfast recently was actually a surprise – for the guests, that is. The bride and groom had invited everyone to a 1920’s-themed cocktail party and asked the guests to dress appropriately, but made no mention of a wedding on the invitations. About 45 minutes into the party, the groom called for everyone’s attention and thanked the surprised party goers for coming to the wedding and sharing in the special day. As you can imagine, the announcement that the ceremony was about to begin was of course was met by cries of delight. What a fun and unique wedding! We at The Morning Star wish Patrick and Jo great joy together!
A Morning Wedding
Just as soon as we got done serving breakfast this morning, I changed into a suit, and Bill, Anne and I ran out to the garden for a wedding. Fortunately, the rain had cleared away about an hour beforehand and so we were still able to have the ceremony in the garden. It was very sweet and some of our guests came out to watch and take photos. We at The Morning Star wish Robert and Cynthia a world of happiness!
Travel Theme: Wild
Wild is this week’s Travel Theme from Where’s My Backpack.
The photo below is of Rudbeckia Triloba (Brown-Eyed Susans) which I planted years ago and have allowed to naturalize in the easement out by the street in front of the Bed & Breakfast. I like just a touch of wildness in that garden. (I thought that the little ant crawling up one of the flowers added a nice touch for the wild theme.) This is such a sunny and cheerful flower, and it will keep blooming into early autumn.
Back Home
Having been back in town for a few days now, I am beginning to get caught up on my work and on my gardening. Here are a few pictures that I took this morning. By the way, that’s not a smudge on the top photo … it is a cluster of Russian Sage which can be seen in more detail at the far left in the bottom photo. Ok, so now it is back to work for me! Have a great day everyone!

Beautiful for a Day
Hemerocallis – beautiful for a day – is the botanical name for daylilies, so called because each bloom typically lasts for one day. Much of my garden is looking a bit bedraggled from the storm that passed through here last night, but not the daylilies. Since every morning brings all new blooms, they are having their day in the spotlight. This daylily is called Anzac.
Wishing you a lovely weekend …
Happy Echinacea
It is a hot but glorious day here in Manhattan, Kansas and the purple coneflowers are just soaking up the sun. With the Linden tree out front gone, the echinacea which it had partially shaded are looking better than ever. Don’t they just seem to be loving summer? Now if only there were some butterflies out there …
Plum & Blueberry Crumbles
I bought some amazing plums at Eastside Market over the weekend and so decided to make Plum & Blueberry Crumbles for breakfast yesterday. Yum!
Plum & Blueberry Crumbles
makes 4 servings
3 T. + 2 t. unsalted butter, divided
2 lg. ripe black plums, halved and pitted
1/2 c. blueberries
1/4 c. quick cooking rolled oats
1/4 c. all-purpose flour or gluten-free all-purpose flour
3 T. coarsely chopped hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts or pecans
2 1/2 T. light brown sugar
3/4 t. Vietnamese cinnamon
1/4 t. ground aniseed
1/4 t. ground allspice
1/4 t. ground ginger
1/8 t. ground cardamom
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Using 1 T. of the butter, grease 4 four-inch glass tartlet pans.
2. Cut each plum half into 6 slices. Arrange slices in bottom of pans. Sprinkle blueberries over plums.
3. In a small food processor, pulse together remaining ingredients until crumbly and sticking together. Sprinkle crumb mixture over fruit.
4. Place tartlet pans on baking tray. Bake for 25 minutes or until bubbly. Serve warm.
Enjoy!
A Fine Morning for Quilting
Since my guests were all having late breakfasts this morning, I decide to do some photography in the garden while I had a chance. When I was out there, I noticed one of our guests sitting on the porch and working on a very handsome quilt. I decided to switch gears and photograph her instead. Abby was enjoying the morning light for working on her project while waiting for her husband to get up for breakfast. A friend had given Abby some sunflower fabric that she had purchased on a vacation and Abby was using it in a sunflower-themed quilt. So much painstaking work!
Thank you to Abby from Kansas for graciously allowing me to photograph her while she sewed and to use the photos on my blog!
