Library Lovers’ Month

In honor of Library Lovers’ Month, the Manhattan Public Library has invited people to say what they love about the library. In addition to the obvious things – the book collection and the helpful staff – I love its trees.  Pictured here are Red Bud and White Bud trees by the Poyntz Avenue entrance. I can’t wait to see them in bloom again this spring!

After the Storm

The sun is shining this morning and everything looks beautiful after the 12.8 inches of fresh snow that fell here in Manhattan, Kansas yesterday. It is frigidly cold, though, and the schools and some businesses are closed; so not too many people are out and about town. It is hard to believe that it was almost 60 F degrees here a few days ago!

Blushing Kiss Martini

Laurie's avatarMorning Star Weddings

I’ve been thinking about ideas for Valentine’s Day and I came across a cocktail recipe from Bakers Royale that I thought would be really nice for the occasion – or  for a bridal shower! The combination of flavors in this is slightly tart, slightly florally, and quite refreshing and pleasant.

Blushing Kiss Martini

2 parts Gin

1 part St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur

1 part fresh Grapefruit Juice (preferably ruby red or pink grapefruit)

Place ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and then strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a slice of ruby red or pink grapefruit. Enjoy!

(The Baker’s Royale version calls for the drink to be stirred with, and then garnished with a sprig of thyme; but I am not a huge fan of herbs in my drinks, so I omitted that. Their version also called for the drink to be poured through a…

Roses from Bridal Show

Laurie's avatarMorning Star Weddings

For The Morning Star’s booth at yesterday’s Manhattan Bridal Show, I bought four dozen pink, white, and pink-and-white roses, plus white, peach and pink alstroemeria, and branches of lemon leaves to make into arrangements for our booth. Connie, Anne and I enjoyed visiting with people who stopped by and we received lots of compliments on the flowers.

Limoncello Sorbet

Image

Having made Limoncello recently, I have been having fun experimenting with ways to serve the liqueur. This sorbet can be served as a palate cleanser or can be incorporated into desserts or cocktails. It is simple to make, but does need to be made a day ahead in order to have time to freeze. But that means that there is still time to make it for New Year’s Day!

This Limoncello Sorbet starts out icy, but quickly melts into a slushy consistency so that it can be sipped rather than eaten.

Ingredients

2 c. water

1 c. sugar

2 lemons

1 c. Limoncello, or to taste

Directions

1. Make a simple syrup out of water and sugar. Place water and sugar in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring frequently to dissolve sugar. Once sugar is dissolved, remove from heat and stir in the juice of one lemon. Allow to cool. Stir in Limoncello. Pour into a glass container, cover tightly and freeze overnight.

2. Before serving, “fluff” sorbet with a fork and then divide between small glasses. (I used 2 oz. tequilla glasses.) Squirt each serving with a little bit of juice from the remaining lemon. Serve immediately.

Happy New Year!
